The Struggle:
It happens to the best of us. Mail, school papers, permission slips, receipts, and that form you cannot lose : they all land in the same spot. For some, it's the kitchen counter. For others, it's the entryway or the breakfast bar.
We used to fight it. We'd try to make the paper go somewhere else, and it just… didn't. So instead, we built a system around it!
The Landing Zone:
The key is to stop fighting the natural flow. That spot where paper lands in your home? That's your Landing Zone. Let's build a system that works with it, not against it.

Step 1: The Inbox
Choose one simple container : a box, a basket, a tray. That's where every piece of incoming paper goes. But here's the trick: set up a recycle bin or a shredder nearby. Junk mail never even makes it into the inbox. (We use Black Bear Recycling, and their bin is right outside the garage door : so the junk gets dropped before we even come inside!)
Step 2: Act
Once a week, go through the inbox. Recycle what you don't need, shred what's sensitive, and move actionable items (bills, forms, school papers) to an action pile.
What would you do with an extra 5 minutes every day if you never had to hunt for a lost permission slip again?
Step 3: File
Long-term keepers go into a filing cabinet or a file drawer in your desk. If you don't have either, a portable file box can sit on a bookshelf or closet shelf.
Shop the Look:
- The Inbox (Save): A simple box or basket : anything that corrals the paper works.
- The Inbox (Splurge): This divided or tiered sorter or an acrylic desktop sorter keeps things neat and adds a polished look.
- Supply Holder: A small holder for pens, scissors, and stamps keeps the essentials within reach.
- The Exit Plan: Set a weekly reminder on your phone : 15 minutes to clear the inbox and file what's left.

The School Paper Note:
School papers are their own beast. We set up a School Memory Box for clients : a file box with a hanging folder for each grade (including Pre-K and high school). We only keep originals, art, stories, and awards. The rest gets recycled. Having the system set up early, especially in the younger grades when the paper flow is relentless, makes a huge difference!
The Bottom Line:
You don't need a perfect system. You need a system that works with your actual home and your actual routine. Whether your Landing Zone is the kitchen counter, the breakfast bar, or the entryway, we can make it functional.
