Getting organized is a wonderful feeling, but the “what do I do with this?” phase can be a major roadblock! It’s not surprising that many of our clients feel stuck when they have a pile of items that are too good to toss but don’t belong in their homes anymore. To help you push through the overwhelm, we’ve put together this quick-reference guide for the Flathead Valley.

Think of this as your local cheat sheet for finding a new home for your unwanted items!

THE BYE-BYE BOX SYSTEM

We set up a “Bye-Bye Box” for every single client we work with. It is the most effective way to prevent clutter from creeping back into your living spaces!

• What it is: A designated bin, box, or basket that lives in a high-traffic transition area like your garage or mudroom.
• The system: When you find something that no longer serves you, it goes straight into the box. No second-guessing!
• The routine: When the box is full, simply drop it off at one of the locations below on your next trip to town.

We empty these for our clients during maintenance sessions, but you can absolutely maintain this habit yourself! What would it feel like to have a permanent exit strategy for your clutter?

WHERE TO DONATE

When your items still have life left in them, these local organizations can put them to great use.

• Flathead Industries Thrift Store https://flatheadindustries.org
  • Location: 40 E Idaho St, Kalispell
  • Hours: Daily 10-6
  • Accepts: Clothing, furniture, and housewares. They have a fantastic mission supporting employment for individuals with disabilities.
• Veterans Thrift Store (Veterans Food Pantry) https://veteransfoodpantry.org
  • Location: 1349 US Highway 2 E, Kalispell
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 10-4:30
  • Accepts: Clothing and household items. Proceeds directly support local veterans.
• Abbie Shelter https://www.abbieshelter.org
  • Drop-off: Glacier Collision Worx, 29 W Cottonwood Dr, Evergreen
  • Details: Supports domestic violence survivors. We recommend checking their website for their current wish list before dropping off.
• Hope Pregnancy Ministries https://hopepregnancyministries.org
  • Location: 940 1st Ave E, Kalispell
  • Hours: Mon-Thu 12-4
  • Accepts: New or gently used baby items, diapers, and baby gear.
• HEART Locker https://www.kalispellheartprogram.org
  • Location: Elrod Elementary, 412 3rd Ave W, Kalispell
  • Hours: Wed 10-2 & first Sat of month 8:30-11:30 (Suspended May-Aug for used items).
  • Details: Provides clothing and essentials to local students in need.
• Habitat for Humanity ReStore https://www.flatheadrestore.org
  • Location: 2555 US-93, Kalispell
  • Accepts: Furniture, appliances, and building materials.
  • Pro Tip: They offer FREE pickup within 20 miles! Call 406-752-2905 to schedule (usually 2-4 weeks out).

WHERE TO RECYCLE

For the things that can’t be donated, recycling is the next best step for a functional, eco-friendly home.

• Black Bear Recycling https://www.blackbearrecycling.com
  • Service: Bi-weekly curbside pickup.
  • Cost: $31.99/month for a 64-gallon bin.
  • Accepts: Glass, cardboard, paper, aluminum, tin, and #1/#2 plastics.
  • Why we love them: This is the one service our clients struggle with the most, and it is worth every penny! It removes the “recycling pile” from your garage forever. Call 406-531-7421 to sign up.
• Valley Recycling (Evergreen Disposal) https://www.valleyrecycling.com
  • Location: 1410 Hwy 2 W, Kalispell
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 7-4
  • Accepts: Drop-off for cardboard, paper, aluminum cans, and #1/#2 plastics.
• Best Buy https://stores.bestbuy.com/mt/kalispell/2407-highway-93-n-1016.html
  • Location: 2407 Hwy 93 N, Kalispell
  • Accepts: Flatscreen TVs (under 50″), computers, and phones. Limit of 3 items per day. Call 406-752-1300 for potential fees.
• Pacific Steel & Recycling https://www.pacific-steel.com
  • Location: 105 Montclair Dr, Kalispell
  • Accepts: Scrap metal, most electronics (no TVs), and appliances without freon.
• Staples
  • Accepts: Computers, mobile devices, and ink cartridges. They do not accept TVs or large appliances.

BATTERIES & HAZARDOUS WASTE

Some items require a little extra care to keep our valley beautiful!

• Alkaline Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt): Can go in regular trash in small amounts.
• Rechargeable Batteries: Take these to Batteries Plus, Best Buy, Home Depot, or Staples.
• Household Hazardous Waste: Flathead County Landfill hosts a drop-off on the 3rd Saturday of each month by appointment only. Call 758-5910 to schedule.
• Medicine Drop Boxes: Keep expired meds out of the water supply! Use the 24/7 drop box at the Flathead Co Justice Center (920 S Main) or during business hours at Walgreens (40 W Idaho).

SHREDDING & PAPER

• Valley Recycling: Offers paper recycling drop-off.
• Office Supply Stores: Many local shops offer per-pound shredding services.
• Local Events: Keep an eye on local credit unions and banks; they often host free community shredding events in the spring and fall!

SHIPPING MATERIALS

• UPS Store (Kalispell & Whitefish): They often accept clean bubble wrap for reuse. It’s a great way to clear out that “shipping stash” in the closet!
